The book is essentially English. It had to be. PD makes no secret of the fact that it was born out of years of despair and a growing awareness that the United Kingdom is  following a path that can only end in economic and social disaster.

 

A System of government that hands the keys to the future to political Parties that by their very structure and the conduct of those laughingly referred to as leaders, too many of them third rate and manifestly corrupt.....an Establishment that accepts and apparently condones ludicrous, confrontational games and farcical posturing at the taxpayers’ expense......ought not to exist, never mind prevail. Indeed, it represents a national tragedy that can no longer be denied.

 

The power to bring the nation to its knees, however, remains vested in this archaic System and that same group of people.  And yet their conduct is never effectively challenged even by a supposedly free Press, which pays lip-service to supporting the electorate's concerns by demonstrating a vast, vested interest in maintaining the status-quo.

 

The ballot box thus measures nothing but impotence, leaving successive generations of the British people powerless to intervene.

 

Wilder’s Women is a necessarily fictional account of how Mike Carlow—a millionaire many times over—is coerced by his business partner into harnessing the obsession with personal gain at the heart of the British Establishment, and by using the news-media which support it—to make an eleventh hour bid to rid the United Kingdom of political wastrels and an archaic System of government that must inevitably destroy it.
